Review: New L.A Girl Cosmetics

Hey guys!

I know most of you are excited to see this review as these have gotten a lot of hype over social media the minute Dischem and LA Girl Cosmetics SA announced their release this month on Instagram

I, for one, was really really excited as I’ve seen such great reviews, especially by 1 of my favorite beauty gurus, Kathleen Lights
Having dry skin, anything that has the word “illuminating” in it, immediately gets my attention
There are 16 shades to choose from, so you’re likely to find a good match, as well as a WHITE foundation. It’s Super impressive for such an affordable brand to come out with a white foundation, if which you didn’t know, is used to lighten your foundation, as a makeup artist, this will definitely come in handy. If you struggle to find foundations that are light enough for your skin then this would be great.
I’ve also seen excellent reviews on the Strobing powders, as we all know that some “drugstore” highlighters can tend to be chalky, chunky and glittery. Here in SA, we tend to have a lack of options at the drugstore when it comes to highlighters

(By drugstore, I mean stores such as Clicks, Dischem and the like)
So, here are my thoughts on these…
Right off the bat, I was totally blown away by this foundation.

It provides medium to full coverage without looking cakey or heavy on the skin, and has the most beautiful dewy finish. I doubt people with oily skin would enjoy this finish though, or may need to powder the entire face.
I have the shade Fair and find it suits my skin tone really well (kind of surprised by that actually, as I find it really hard to find foundations that match my skin tone well)
I also found that I needed to lightly powder my T-zone so I don’t end up looking greasy, I don’t powder my entire face so that the natural dewy sheen of the foundation remains where i want it.
It lasted really well throughout the day and didn’t seem to get oily, even though I do have dry skin.

It also didn’t cling to any dry patches or emphasize any dryness, I found that it sort of revives my complexion, giving it some life and a healthy glow!
The Strobe Lite Strobing powder is BOMB!

It’s a beautiful reflective powder which blends into the skin, giving it a shimmery sheen, without looking chunky or glittery
I was so chuffed when I realized that this specific shade, 80 WATT, is an exact dupe for the highly sought after Becca x Jaclyn Hill – Champagne Pop!!!
Side by side swatches below, can you spot the difference???

(With flash and without)

Left is Becca Champagne Pop and Right is LA Girl 80 Watt
Lastly, the brow pencil… This also blew me away after the 1st use

(I think because I’ve been using a chunky brow pencil recently)
The pencil nib is extremely tiny, which makes creating strokes that imitate natural hairs, super easy
It’s pigmented and creamy but has that waxiness which allows it to stick onto the skin and eyebrow hairs

Yet not too creamy to the point where you need to go in extremely light handed to avoid going overboard.
And…it has a brow spoolie on the other side which is perfect.
The shade Brunette matches my brows spot on! It’s not too ashy or too warm

There are a variety of shades available so you’re definitely bound to find something that matches you.

For R85, I think this is a real bargain!

I hope you guys enjoyed this little review

I’ve been using the products for about 2 months now, I’ve used up the eyebrow pencil and need to repurchase, just haven’t been to Dischem in a while

And I love using the foundation any time I need that extra coverage, for nights out, etc

As for the highlighter, I usually only use it when going for a full glam look as it is pretty intense ๐Ÿ˜‰ and just too intense for day to day usage

Updated Daily Makeup Routine

Hey beauties!
So last week I collaborated with Raeesa from Style Unboxed and we did our Updated Skincare Routine
This week we’ve done our updated daily makeup routine
Skincare and makeup go hand in hand

If you don’t look after your skin, your makeup will never look flawless.
So once you’ve gotten down your skincare basics, you can move onto perfecting your makeup.
These are the products I used daily to do my makeup (not necessarily the exact same product, I always switch up my foundation, concealer and bronzer, but the type of product stays the same)

These are just my current favorites, my recent go-tos

I will also mention a few others that I’ve been loving
If you would like to know how I do my makeup daily, just keep on reading!
Ok so after I’ve completed my skincare routine, I wait for my moisturizer/sunscreen to completely settle into my skin before starting with my foundation
And because my skin has been really good recently, I stick to a light to medium, natural coverage

I absolutely love the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation!

It’s right at the top of my list! I’ve already been through an entire bottle and I’m on my 2nd and 3rd (coz I have 2 different shades)
It looks really natural on the skin and doesn’t look cakey

Another favorite , that has a similar finish and coverage is the Rimmel Match Perfection foundation
I then follow with some concealer under my eyes. If it’s not this 1, I gravitate towards the MAC Pro Longwear concealer

These 2 are my favorites

I don’t even need to set them coz they don’t crease on me, so that way I don’t loose any of the natural dewiness the foundation provided
I wait a minute or so before moving onto bronzer

My favorite at the moment is The Body Shop Honey Bronzer and I have the shade 2

I also really like the Bourjois Chocolate bronzer
I don’t wear blush on a daily basis, I prefer just to add some warmth and dimension to my face with some bronzer
And I can never go without some highlighter!

Highlighter is the whole point of my makeup!

I switch between natural looking highlights and super shimmery 1s, just depends on my mood

I picked up the MAC Soft n Gentle highlighter a while ago and I’ve been using it a lot!

It’s something that can be used lightly or built up

That’s what I love about it, and the fact that it suits so many skin tones
Next I move on to brows, another staple, I have to do my brows daily

And it’s actually weird because like a year ago, I NEVER did my brows
I like to use pencils and this 1 by LOV cosmetics is bomb, it reminds me of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer because it has the same angled, triangular shaped tip
I then set my brows with an eyebrow gel

The Benefit Gimme Brow is awesome! It’s tinted so you don’t even need to fill them in with a pencil beforehand, which I sometimes do

But it sets the brows in place nicely and they last all day!
The only things I use on my eyes daily is some eyeliner and mascara

And I gravitate towards brown because it’s softer and more flattering on my brown eyes

They enhance the eyes without being too strong or too dark

Mascara is a staple because they enhance and open up the eyes in the best way, and I mean, who doesn’t love long, luscious lashes?!

I’ve been loving the Benefit Roller Lash coz it curls the lashes and holds it as well
Lastly, I pop on some lipgloss or lip balm and I’m good to go!
I hardly wear lipsticks during the week, I find them too glam for a day to day basis

So I stick to lightly tinted and glossy lips

Sometimes to finish off the look, I spritz my face with some makeup setting spray and my makeup will last till the end of the night
I look put together without makeup much effort or taking that much time

I can comfortably do my makeup in 15 minutes max

Updated Skincare Routine

Hi guys!
It’s been a hot minute since we posted!

This year I promise to put more effort into the blog, I’ve recently had some more free time on my hands and hopefully I can get some creative writing up for you guys!
I’m so excited to announce that this post is in collaboration with a fellow beauty blogger, Raeesa, from Style Unboxed
We also have another collab post coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled

You can also find Raeesa’s blog and Instagram deets linked at the end of the post, so be sure to check out her post for her skincare routine, as well as her other awesome posts!

Give her a follow on Instagram, she currently has a huge giveaway running and you can win some cool stuff, including a Vintage Beauty hamper ๐Ÿ˜‰
On to the post!
I’ve waited a while before posting my updated skincare routine because, as you guys know, I love trying out new stuff

But over the past year, I’ve been consistent and I’ve figured out what my skin loves and needs to stay clear and healthy
Along with my routine, I’ve also shared some tips and tricks that I’ve discovered along the way and really work for me
To find out what that is, keep reading!

So every evening I remove my makeup (if I’m wearing any) as early as possible, I don’t wait for bedtime, and I use my Vintage Beauty Cold Cream
I slather some on, massage it in and then use a tissue to wipe off
Later on, when I’m getting ready for bed, I’ve been switching between the Liyary Beldi Black soap and Pretycin soap
Both work well to remove excess dirt and oil and leave the skin feeling squeaky clean!

A few times a week I will also use my Foreo Luna Mini device to deep clean

Next I follow with a douse of Vintage Beauty Facial Tonic
Once it’s semi dry, I follow with some Betahydroxy Gel by Creme Classique

(This is a fairly new addition but I’ve used a different AHA/BHA gel from Janssen Cosmetics before this)
After a few minutes I apply my Vintage Beauty Rejuvenating Eye Cream and some Cold Cream
My morning routine is quite similar, except that I Use the Vintage Beauty 3 in 1 Facial Polish to cleanse with

The rest of my routine is the same as my night routine, but as a last step, I follow with a sunscreen

The 1 I’ve been using and loving is also from Creme Classique, it’s their Safari moisturizing sunscreen SPF40

It’s quite moisturizing but not greasy at all! It just absorbs into the skin so well

I also just wanna share some tips and tricks which I think work well for me in maintaining a clear, healthy complexion.
1stly… using an oil based makeup remover, such as VB cold cream is excellent to break down makeup and completely clean it out from the pores

Also, double cleansing ensures all makeup, dirt and impurities are removed, anything left behind can cause breakouts
Also, by using the cold cream, my skin is kept smooth and hydrated, not stripping the skin of its natural oils
2ndly… using an AHA or BHA treatment daily or a few times a week not only helps to keep breakouts at bay, but also makes existing 1s go away faster and fades scarring faster
As some of you may know, since I’ve mentioned it a thousand times before, I suffer with comedonal acne, which means I often get clogged pores/congested skin

The AHA/BHA exfoliates the skin both deep down and on the surface which prevents the pores from getting clogged

And I’ve noticed a significant improvement in the smoothness of my skin
I love to use clay masks weekly, as well as sheet masks every so often (my favorite are from Shades of Mink)

It just depends on how my skin is feeling and looking
Another trick I love doing which makes all the difference in my skin is using the VB Cold Cream as a mask

Then using a hot wash cloth to steamy face and wipe away
Doing this leaves my skin looking so smooth and soft and has a noticeable glow for days after

It’s definitely also helps in deep cleaning the pores

I also like to do this before applying a clay mask,

The cold cream loosen dirt and clogged pores and then the clay mask pulls it all out

And you’re left with clear and healthy skin
As we all know, to slay with a flawless face of makeup, you need to take care of your skin and slay the skincare game

Then only will your makeup apply and look better than ever
And that will be our next post, we’ll be sharing our updated daily makeup routines with you guys, including some tips and tricks to slay your makeup game!

So stay tuned for that! ๐Ÿ˜‰
Hope you guys enjoyed this post, don’t forget to heck put Raeesa’s post as well and show her some love
Stay Beautiful

Current Beauty Favoritesย

Hey beauties!
I purposely skipped last months “monthly” favorites post coz most of the stuff I was enjoying I only started used like halfway through the month and didn’t want to post about it knowing that I haven’t tested it out long enough to call it a “favorite”

So I decided it be best to combine it all and compile and “current favorites”

So he warned, some of these stuff might have already been mentioned before.
Let’s start with skincare

Avon ClearSkin Professional- Clarifying Toner Pads

I have been obsessed with chemical exfoliants, they work really well on my skin and these toner pads from Avon are just amazing! They’re really affordable at R92 for 45 pads, and they contain both glycolic and salicylic acids
I only use them once a day, in the evenings and they do a great job at keeping my skin texture smooth and my pores clear

The next product is a staple in my routine and I really can’t live without since introducing it into my routine.

Vintage Beauty Facial Tonic
Featured here is the Revitalizing scent, I also do use and love the Invigorating one as well

I use it after cleansing, as a toner, as a primer before makeup and to set my makeup when I’m done

I also use it throughout the day to refresh my skin.

It’s really soothing and refreshing. It works great to prep skin before moisturizer if you have dry skin and really locks in the goodness.

Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water
I received these as a gift with purchase when I ordered online from Cosmetiques De France

I’ve only ever tried the Garnier Micellar water and while I did love it, it got replaced by my Vintage Beauty Cold Cream.

I like keeping this to quickly remove my makeup when I need to makeup wudhu (ablution)

It’s quick and easy and gets the job done really well.
Now onto makeup ๐Ÿ˜

Let’s start with face/base products

NYX Angel Veil Primer
I’ve recently fallen in love with this all over again!

It’s so smoothing and moisturizing to the skin, a great primer for my fellow dry skinned ladies out there.

It does have some silicone in it but doesn’t feel slippery on the skin and definitely doesn’t dry the skin out like some other pore minimizing primers can do.

I’m not sure if this is available in SA yet, haven’t been to a NYX stand in a while, I got mine from Feelunique.com

Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation and Rimmel Lasting Finish foundation

I’ve already mentioned the Bourjois foundation in a previous favorites so I won’t go into in much, I did however buy a mother shade, a shade lighter in 51 Light Vanilla, as far as I know this is only available online from Cosmetiques de France as I’ve only seen the shade 52 and up in store
As for the Rimmel foundation, a new gem in my ever growing foundation collection

I really love this 1. I wanna do a full review on it, so look out for that.

It’s a satin/demi-matte finish. Lasts so long on the skin and looks so good and fresh all day!

It really smooths the skin and minimizes the look of my pores. I absolutely love it and will be repurchasing soon. It’s really inexpensive as well, so that’s a bonus!

*note, I do add yellow colouring to my foundations so that they match me better. Both foundations mentioned above have been adjusted

Cala Makeup Blending sponge

After seeing a few local beauty bloggers rave about this sponge, I decided to pick up 1 for myself.
1st impressions, I was impressed that it was quite soft and squishy and not too dense.

After using it for quite some time, I can say I am really happy with my purchase, it works well to blend foundation and concealer into the skin and leave a flawless finish. I’m gonna be doing a “beauty sponge comparison” post soon, I’m just waiting on my Real Techniques sponge that I ordered to arrive.

RCMA No-Color Powder

If you have dry skin – Get this!
If you have oily skin – Get this!

If you love “baking” – Get this!

If you’re a makeup artist – You NEED this!

This is the best loose powder I’ve tried yet.

It works so well to set the face and for baking. It’s no wonder all the YouTubers have been loving and raving about this.

I got mine from Muse Beauty on Instagram, but I’ve seen a few other online retailers sell it as well. All of them are priced more or less the same.

CATRICE Made to Stay Smoothing Lip Polish 08 What’s your Atti-Nude

This has pretty much been the only lip product I’ve been using for the past few weeks, no lies.

It really does smooth the lips and gives a natural colour to it, like a “my lips but better”

And it does sort of dry down but doesn’t dry the lips or look dry, if that makes sense.

Also, once it wears off, it leaves a tint on the lips, almost like a bitten kinda look. I love it!

Avon Supershock mascara and MaxFactor False Lash Effect mascara

I’m sure you all know that this Avon mascara is like holy grail status for me. And this Max Factor 1 is pretty awesome as well! But the 2 of them layered ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ omg! Someone actually asked me if I was wearing false lashes!

The result: super long, separated, full, luscious lashes! Nuff said!
LA Girl Gel liner in Dark Brown and E.L.F Cream Eyeliner in Black

I’ve been into Gel liners, can you tell??

I use them both on the inner waterline as well as on the lash line for winged liner.

They’re both equally pigmented, they glide on really well and stay all day.

My LA girl Gel liner in black has started to dry up so I started using the ELF 1 and I really love it.

Max Factor Creme Puff blushes and Bourjois Chocolate Bronzing powder

I got these because of the constant raves from the lovely ladies fromAll Dolled Up

And they did not disappoint! I have the shades 01 Nude Mauve, 05 Lovely Pink and 30 Gorgeous Berries

They have a lively sheen to them without looking chunky and glittery, they are really pigmented as well and the look so gorgeous on the cheeks!

They are a little pricey for a “drugstore” products, so I waited for a 3 for 2 sale on Cosmetiques de France and then snatched them ๐Ÿ˜‰

As for the Bourjois bronzer, I finally found a bronzer that looks good on my skin. Warms up the complexion without looking muddy or orange. Its a matte powder but does have some glitter through it but doesn’t really show up as shimmery or glittery on the skin, so it’s pretty much matte to me.

It’s not overly pigmented to where you have to watch how much you apply but it’s not poorly pigmented either, does that make sense?

Anyway I’ve been really loving it.

Did I mention it smells so yummy?!

Saved the best for last ๐Ÿ˜‰ highlighters

City Colors Highlight Trio, Physicians Formula Shimmer strips in Warm Nude and Essence Eyeshadow in 01 Snowflake

1st of all, all of these are recommendations from Thataylaa on YouTube

I got the City Color 1 from Muse Beauty

These 3 have just been in my rotation for the past 2 months or so

I don’t use any other highlighters. They are all very finely milled and look very smooth in the skin, not shimmery or glittery at all, which is just my kinda highlight

My favorite way to apply highlighter is wet, as to not destroy the powder in the pan, I 1st pick up some product on my brush and then spritz the brush with a makeup spray and apply

I use the Vintage Beauty Facial Tonic, any makeup setting spray will work, such as MAC Fix +
Doing this intensifies the pigment and makes the highlight sort of melt into the skin rather than sit on top of it.

That’s it for my current favorite products! Shew that was long 1!

I hope you guys enjoyed the post and gave you some insight on products you were maybe contemplating on whether or not to buy.

If you guys have any post suggestions, leave a comment below.

I’d also love to know what are your current favorites so drop me a comment and let me know ๐Ÿ˜Š
